The old Gaelic place names were highly descriptive and were a navigation guide in themselves, a form of early Sat Nav. The Ordnance Survey gave us our modern maps, but also the unfortunate phonetics which mask the meaning of the originals.
Thanks to the scholars Joyce and O'Donovan we have very good guides back.
This modest local sample here may be improved on by anyone with native local knowledge.
